17th-21st January 2022 | KCRE, Agumbe

Are lichens, plants, fungi, or algae?
Where are they found and how do they grow?
What is their role in the ecosystem?

If you are intrigued and aspire to learn about lichens, then this workshop is for you.

For a week you will stay in the pristine forests of Agumbe. Connect with India's premier lichenologists who will lead you from the basics into the world of lichen research.

Here is what you will learn...

You will be part of theory sessions, practical hands-on activities, lichen collection, observation and study techniques, and learn to write research papers

  • Lichen collection and preservation techniques
  • Identifying chemicals in lichens by spot test, TLC and micro crystallography
  • Identification of various groups of lichens by morphological, anatomical and chemical characters
  • Molecular techniques in lichen taxonomy (theory)
  • Biodeterioration, biomonitoring and bioprospecting lichens (theory)
  • Guidance for research paper and project proposal writing

Your takeaways...

  • Get a holistic understanding of lichen biology.
  • Able to collect, preserve and identify lichens yourself
  • Be exposed to various aspects of lichenology and be able to select your topic for further research
  • Obtain literature on various topics in pdf form.
  • Get post-conference guidance by the experts

Dr Siljo Joseph started his research on lichens in 2009 with his master’s dissertation on “Studies on the lichen flora of the Nilgiri hills, Tamil Nadu”.

He was awarded PhD in Botany (Lichenology) from Bharathiar University.

He received the prestigious DST INSPIRE Faculty Fellowship from the Indian National Science Academy. He is an Honorary Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Biological Sciences in the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), Govt. of India.

His primary research focuses on biogeography, conservation, ecology, systematics and e- monography of the lichen group Arthoniales in India. He is keen on developing web-based applications and programs for the identification of lichens.
